In the year 2000, the Theodor-Heuss-Kolleg was created by the Robert Bosch Stiftung. Building on a series of initial experiences since 1996 (an annual seminar project for the empowerment of students from Central and Eastern Europe) through MitOst e.V. By supporting volunteer projects, we gave impetus to many smaller social projects, an idea woven into the establishment of the program, and one we still feel committed to today.
Much like its fellows, the Theodor-Heuss-Kolleg also continues to develop. Initially, this took place in geographical terms: More rooted in Central and Eastern Europe at its outset, soon it expanded to include other countries as well. In 2006, there were 500 participants from 29 countries and 183 supported projects.
In 2010, there were 1,756 funded individuals in 34 countries. Since 2010, the Kollege has been focusing on cooperation programs implemented with local and regional partners. This way of working began in Russia in 2006, and the newest cooperation program is “Khatwa” in Egypt (2014).
In 2017, the Theodor-Heuss-Kolleg and its cooperation partners support more than 700 junge people each year in the (South)Eastern Europe, Russia, in the Caucasus, Turkey, Baltic states and in the North Afrika.
